Gun Rights - Links

My stance on the right to bear arms is that most people in most countries should have the right to defend themselves as long as firearms ownership is regulated effectively. This includes the types of firearms that should be available to the general public, pistols, revolvers, shotguns and rifles I believe are acceptable. However, automatic weapons such as sub machine guns and automatic rifles which are designed and used for warfare should not be made available to ordinary citizens for the obvious reason that the only use for these types of weapons is to engage in mass murder.
I think 'banning guns' altogether, which many people are screaming for to happen, is not an effective way to solve the controversial problem of gun violence in countries like America, which is often in the limelight on account of the number of recent shootings in public places such as schools and movie theaters. I believe this action will not only do nothing to solve the problem, as unregistered firearms are constantly being moved into the country and purchased on the black market anyway, but will also take away the honest citizen's  right to defend themselves from potential home invasions and people who would intentionally harm them for some kind of personal gain.

  2. Gun control is a powerful subject and I like the digressions you made, but you only linked quotes from those with similar sentiment and advocacy for gun law websites. You touched on it briefly but it would be far more palpable to discuss statistics, popular culture, The 2nd Amendment, cases where regulation failed and innocent people were injured, even media driven tragedies, to show the depth such carelessness can bring. before displaying ideas from those who wish to protect there liberty, but take a sensible approach. Just a thought, nice work.

  3. Interesting argument.
I agree with you that if gun possession was made illegal in the U.S people would find a way to buy them anyway. However, I'm not sure I agree that fighting gun against gun is an effective form of self-defense. I could see people getting scared and shooting somebody who wasn't actually a threat and then being arrested, while the other person loses their life.

On the other hand I suppose if somebody broke into someone's house they could brandish a firearm and scare that person away. I think that's one of the main reasons American families like to keep guns.

I do agree with you that to think banning all guns will stop shootings is a little naive, however I feel it would make it less easy for troubled teenagers to get their hands on their parents guns and take them to public places.

  4. Hi Stephanie, I like your point that there is a difference between a weapon of mass murder and a weapon like a pistol. I agree that there is no way that the public should be able to get their hands on an automatic weapon of military standard. However I have to say that while it's true that guns are always going to be imported on the black market, the less guns in the hands of the public the better. When someone buys a gun there is no real way to know their motivation for buying it. It is all too easy to obtain a firearms license even here in New Zealand. F, r example I do not like the idea of people with mental illness that is not obvious and hasn't been diagnosed being able to get a gun as easily as they can because their intentions could change in a split second. Also I don't want bored teenagers getting their hands on Daddy's gun, playing around a bit and then injuring or killing themselves or others because they weren't considering safety and have never been taught safety rules about guns. So my personal view is that guns shouldn't be as easy to obtain, but still lawful for the public to own.
